1. What should I wear to the Burlesque class?
Wear anything you can move comfortably in! Students most commonly come in gym gear or yoga style clothing. Anything that you can dance in.
If you would like to add a touch of burlesque to your ensemble, fishnets or stockings are a nice touch. They can be paired with short tunics or skirts for a look that is sexy but comftorable.
Some students prefer to dance in heels but this is not essential (sneakers, bare feet, ballet flats or dance shoes are fine). If you would like to wear heels please no anklebreakers! Make sure they are sturdy!
Each class will revise core burlesque techniques: Burlesque Walk, Bump, Grinds, Shakes and Shimmies. Allow yourself to learn, build and improve these areas each week - work at a pace that suits you!
2. Am I too old to learn burlesque? I'm nervous about coming along
We have taught students from 18 - 80 years of age. Our current classes have students from their early twenties right through to their forties and fifties. Mothers, daughters, students, professionals are all welcomed. We offer a non judgemental, friendly environment to learn in.
You may be interested to learn that many of the burlesque 'legends' who are usualy aged 60+ (Dixie Evans, Tempest Storm, Satan's Angel and April March) still perform. Age is not a barrier and we enjoy helping women feel good about themselves and discover (or rediscover) their 'sexy' side.
3. Can you learn burlesque if you are overweight?
Of course! One of the aspects that people love about burlesque is that it embraces all shapes, sizes, ages and ethnicity. For every Dita von Teese there is a Dirty Martini. One of the things we hope you come away from at our classes is that there is no perfect size, perfect look or perfect body. Live with health and feel good about your body whatever size or shape you may be.
4. What can I expect to learn at a class?
Our classes focus on engaging students with the basic elements of burlesque. We teach the core movements of burlesque every week: Diva walks, bumps and grinds, shakes and shimmies
As we run classes on a week to week basis we will often take students through a new skill or different aspect of burlesque performance every week. The classes are great to join at any time and you will pick up something different every week.
Some of the skills offered include: Feather Boa/Silk Scarf Teasing; Gloves Removal; Stocking Peels; Pin Up Poses; Fan Dancing. Just to name a few! Always happy to do something specific on request
5. Is there anything else I can gain from Burlesque classes?
Our classes also focus on encouraging students to feel good about themselves and to enjoy taking some time out of their busy lives to focus on themselves. Many women who come through the studio often (literally) carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and we encourage a lightening of this load. Many of our classes include relaxation techniques that can be incorporated in our day to day lives.
6. I'm interested in performing burlesque, is this a good place to start?
Yes! Whilst you don't need to have taken burlesque classes to be a performer we find the classes do help as we teach not only core burlesque movements, but also the history of burlesque and learning about some of the famed burlesque artists from past to present. This often helps guide students in the direction of burlesque they would like to perform. We also teach performance skills (be it for home or for stage) that some students have found helpful.
Most importantly coming to our classes introduces you to the burlesque community in Tasmania. Miss Kitty's Meow produce most of Tasmania's major burlesque events that showcase performers from across Tasmania, Australian and Overseas. We also offer regular 'newcomer' nights that are perfect for performers starting out. So for many this can be a means to learning about the events operating in Hobart and to gain some mentoring.
7. Are the classes just for women?
No! We have a few 'boylesque' students coming to our classes. Many men find that the classes help them loosen up, discover a bit of a sexy way of moving and find the techniques we teach exhilerating. We welcome everyone along!
8. I'm nervous about learning in a group environment. Do you offer private classes?
Classes can be on a one-on-one basis or small groups are also welcome.
Prices range from $40 - $60 for a 75 minute class
